What is it?
Most insurance companies use the FPC (Fire Protection Classification) rate to establish fire insurance rates for your home or business. The Washington Survey and Rating Bureau sets the FPC rate based on risk factors and the abilities of the fire department.

As of December 2018 the Fire District is rated the following fire protection class:

 

Within the City of Granite Falls

Protection Class (PC) 3 for dwellings and commercial properties located  within 1000' of a fire hydrant and (PC) 4 for dwellings and commercial properties without a fire hydrant within 1000' of the property.

Unincorporated areas of Fire District 17

Protection Class (PC) 4 for dwellings and commercial properties located within 5 road miles of a responding fire station and within 1000' of a fire hydrant. 

​

Properties within 5 road miles of a responding fire station but without a fire hydrant within 1000' will receive a protection class (PC) 5.

All properties over 5 road miles but within 7 road miles will receive a protection class (PC) 9.

​

All other properties outside of 7 road miles from a responding fire station will receive a protection class (PC) 9A.

With the major changes the Fire District has made over the past several years, the Survey and Rating Bureau substantially lowered our current rate from an (PC) 5 to a (PC) 3 and (PC) 4 for areas with hydrants, and a (PC) 5 and (PC) 4 for the remaining areas within 5 road miles of a responding fire station.

How does it affect me?
This lower rating will reduce fire insurance premiums (will vary by insurance company) for most businesses and homeowners living within the Fire District.

What do I have to do?
Contact your insurance carrier and request your policy be reviewed using the PC rating as described above. A letter from the Washington Survey and Rating Bureau with our current protection class rating is linked above.

How do I know if I live in a Hydrant area that will receive a rating of 5?
If you are unsure if you have a fire hydrant within 1000' of your home or business you can call the fire station at (360)691-5553 and we can verify on our mapping system.
